Shanghai Fashion Week continues to grow, develop and evolve, helping it to become an industry standard. Each season all eyes are on the catwalk shows from Shanghai Fashion Week (held at Xintiandi), to Labelhood and Shanghai International Fashion Showcase (SIFS). We caught up with Croatian-born, Milan based Damir Doma who showed at SIFS A/W 17/18 to get his take on China’s buzzing fashion event. Do you currently have a retail presence in China? Damir Doma: We don’t have our own retail presence in China but we are very happy and proud to collaborate with some of the most prestigious multi-brand shops in China. Amongst them there are: Lane Crawford, Hong Kong and Shanghai; Reel Assembly and Blank Boutique, Shanghai; Galeries Lafayette, Beijing; Hug, Chengdu; INXX, Hangzhou; Shine, Triple Major and D-Mop in Hong Kong; New Yaohan, Macau. How did the SIFS opportunity come about? Damir Doma: We got the invitation and support by Terence Chu and the Apax Group. Generally we present the collection during Milan Fashion Week but this was a great opportunity to connect with our Chinese followers. I really enjoyed the whole experience. How was the whole fashion week experience for you? Damir Doma: I have to say that the organisational part was sensational. Since the first contact with Apax everything was super smooth and professional. Personally, I was very impressed and surprised by Shanghai as a city but also as a fashion capital. I visited Shanghai 15-years-ago for the first time and I hadn’t been back to Shanghai for a long time. I believe that Shanghai back then is not comparable with the Shanghai of today. The city and its people felt very open and modern and I’m very curious to see how it will develop in the upcoming years. It reminds me a bit of the first time I came to Tokyo in 2005 / 2006. How was the local reception to your A/W 17/18 collection? Were there any favourites from local media, guests and buyers? Damir Doma: The feedback we had was great and I am really happy about that. The collection was very well received especially related to volume and proportions, fabrics and colours. Just to mention some specifics orange looks, bleached pieces, bomber jackets. Do you have plans to return to or grow your presence in China? Damir Doma: I said that I would love to return to China very soon; I think it’s a very exciting place and there are so many great opportunities for independent brands. I feel the market is so sophisticated and ready for the next step and so are we!
