A quick look at the retail data and every Instagram feed revealed that last summer was the summer of the off-the-shoulder top, but now a new style is coming for that crown, enter: Knots and Ties. Lace-up details on womenswear tops, shirts and dresses are already making their retail mark and are forecast to dominate SS17. According to our early April 2017 WGSN Instock retail data ” Lace-up details accounted for 1.7% of new-in apparel last week, up from 1.2% over the same week in 2016, remaining a key part of assortments having first made their presence felt in S/S 16.” Designs see lace-ups migrating to other areas of focus such as the waist, shoulders and legs, rather than just necklines as evident in S/S 16’s bodysuits and rompers. “For the month ending March 26, lace-up details have increased 18.8% YOY in new-in apparel, with tops (+45.5%) and shirts(+10.2%) leading the charge. Lace-ups increased across all market segments, but the premium segment held the highest mix (2.3%),” says Nivindya Sharma, Senior Editor, WGSN Instock. Applied in a variety of widths, ties are used as both a decorative detail and fastening option, with oversized eyelet and D-ring hardware lending a statement feel across woven categories in particular. Consider lace-up details to update jersey basics. “For this season… lace-up details add feminine definition to silhouettes. A relaxed styling aesthetic will prevail, with lace-up tops and shirts balanced with oversized bottoms”, adds Nivindya Sharma.
